Track Expenses on WhatsApp: Type It or Snap the Receipt

2 min readHow-toMoney

Every expense-tracking journey looks the same: download a budgeting app, categorize enthusiastically for nine days, miss a weekend, abandon it forever. The apps aren't bad — the workflow is. Open app → tap add → pick category → type amount → save is five steps too many for a ₹40 chai.

Expense tracking on WhatsApp collapses those five steps into one message. Here's how it works with Mobius.

Step 1: Text your spending like you'd text a friend

The entire logging interface is a sentence:

  • "spent ₹250 on lunch"
  • "1200 for the electricity bill"
  • "auto to office, 80"

Mobius extracts the amount and picks a category automatically. No forms, no dropdowns, no decimal-point gymnastics. A voice note works too — say it while walking out of the shop and it's logged before you reach the corner.

Step 2: Photograph receipts instead of typing them

For anything with a paper trail, skip typing entirely. Send a photo of the receipt and Mobius reads it — amount, merchant, line items, category:

🧾 Logged ₹1,240 — Groceries. That's ₹4,310 this month.

The same AI vision that powers receipt scanning also reads PDFs and other documents, so a scanned utility bill or an emailed invoice PDF works just as well as a crumpled thermal receipt.

Step 3: Ask questions instead of reading dashboards

Traditional expense apps make you find your answers in charts. In a chat, you just ask:

  • "how much did I spend this month?"
  • "what did I spend on food this week?"
  • "biggest expenses in July?"

Answers come back as messages, in the same thread where you logged everything. Your data stays yours — see the privacy policy for how storage and deletion work (short version: ask, and it's deleted).

Why this beats a budgeting app

Capture happens at the moment of spending. You're already holding your phone; WhatsApp is already open. The window between "paid" and "logged" drops from hours (or never) to seconds.

One system, not two. Your reminders can be financial too — "remind me to pay the credit card bill on the 5th" lands in the same chat as your spending log. Our guide to WhatsApp reminders covers everything reminders can do.

No new habit needed. The reason this works is the same reason a WhatsApp AI assistant works in general: it borrows a habit you already have instead of asking you to build a new one.

Getting started
